Sigma Pi Beta Completes Transition, Shows Strength in Academics
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

News Release – February 9, 2010

Contact: Will Mason, Chapter President

Bloomington, IN—Just a few months ago, Sigma Pi was in an intense reorganization and transition. Throughout the past several months 39 men have stepped up to become the new group of men involved with Sigma Pi. They’ve been trained on running a fraternity by executive office staff, cultivated relationships with alumni, and met with alumni leadership at a retreat. These 39 men are working hard to emulate the values of Sigma Pi.

“The Sigma Pi Executive office is extremely proud of the members of our Beta chapter for their accomplishments this year. These young men are dedicated to the ideals of the fraternity and it is evident by their increased participation in philanthropic activity as well as their commitment to scholarship,” said Mark Briscoe, Executive Director of Sigma Pi Fraternity, International.

Sigma Pi’s goal on campus is to create a fraternity that is well rounded socially and academically. The Indiana University Student activities office released grade reports and rankings for the fall 2009 semester listing Sigma Pi as sixth among fraternities on campus. The sixth place ranking is a huge improvement from the prior semester listing of twenty-first.

The rankings list Sigma Pi’s grade point average at 3.242, placing them ahead of twenty nine other organizations and above the all fraternity average of 3.110 and the overall undergraduate average of 3.128.

“A great fraternity on IU’s campus should be well rounded and have a strong social presence as well as academic achievement,” said Chapter President Will Mason.

Because academics are just one aspect of building a strong fraternity, the men of Sigma Pi are not taking a break. They plan to continue to show the value they bring to campus by participating in more philanthropic events, work to recruit a Spring 2010 class of equally talented young men, growing social and intramural involvement on campus, and continue reaching out to alumni to show them they are worth the investment.

The alumni of the chapter continue to work hard as well. They will be launching a capital campaign during a Founder’s Day Event that will take place on February 27, 2010 at the Indiana Governor’s Residence featuring a discussion of how Greek organizations can add more value on Campus with Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett, Higher Education Commissioner Teresa Lubbers, IU Dean of Students Pete Goldsmith, and Executive Director of Sigma Pi Educational Foundation Jon Frost .

“These guys have worked really hard to show Sigma Pi International, Indiana University, Beta Chapter alumni, and each other they can succeed,” said alumni Andy Hahn. “They are making it easy to show people this organization is back on track.”
